About NY's 17th

When I was one month old, my parents moved to this district, and it has been my home ever since. Though I have travelled around the world to serve our nation, my community—the one built with family, friends, and lifelong memories—has always been here.

I am running to represent New York’s 17th Congressional District because I believe I should place my experience and knowledge at the service of my district. I do this out of concern for our future and out of gratitude. I want to give back to the community that has given my family so much, and set me on a path to success in life.

As the child of Hungarian refugees, I am thankful for the people of our community who welcomed me and my family, and empowered us to live the American Dream. It was the educational foundation I received at our public schools, beginning when I learned English in kindergarten, that gave me the tools to ultimately earn a PhD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

With little English skills, my parents were able to support our family through their hard work, state and union jobs, and determination to succeed in America.

Today, for so many across this district and across our nation, that formula is broken. Upward mobility has been stifled, income inequality, taxes, and the cost of living have skyrocketed, and our education system is failing to prepare the next generation with the skills to succeed.

Rockland and Westchester are America in a nutshell. We have dense urban areas and stunning natural beauty. We have diversity of race, ethnicity, religion, ideology, and income. Therefore, we have the tensions and richness that characterize America today. From managing the effects of climate change to achieving housing affordability, if we can solve our problems here, we can solve them for America.

After a 3-decade career defending our nation from foreign threats, I can think of no more meaningful service in the next chapter of my life than to fight to ensure that future generations in our district and our country have the same opportunities growing up here that I had.
