Evelyn Farkas Releases Plans for Criminal Justice Reform

Monday, June 1, 2020

Today, Evelyn Farkas, Democratic candidate for Congress and a high ranking national security official appointed by President Obama, released policy plans to combat police misconduct and create a more equitable criminal justice system following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, the latest in a long and troubled history of senseless murders of black people at the hands of the police.

"Today, America is on fire—and President Trump is fanning the flames. We will not have peace in this country until we dismantle the systemic racism that casts off, incarcerates, and murders black people with impunity," Farkas said. "When our laws do not align with even basic principles of moral justice, our laws must change. In Congress, I will fight to repeal qualified immunity, federalize investigations of police misconduct, and reverse the mass incarceration that has hollowed out so many communities."

Farkas calls for the creation of a national center at the Department of Justice to field allegations, investigate, and prosecute police misconduct. She also proposes nation-wide standards for law enforcement training that mandate nonviolent de-escalation tactics, requiring that violence be used as the absolute last resort with criminal liability if these standards are not adhered to. To address mass incarceration, Farkas proposes an end to mandatory minimum sentencing, legalization of marijuana, forgiveness of low-level drug offenses, and funding for educational, vocational, and therapeutic programs to reduce recidivism for incarcerated people. Farkas' full plan to reform America's criminal justice system can be viewed on her campaign website.

The daughter of refugees from Hungary, and a Westchester native, Dr. Evelyn Farkas has devoted her life to serving her country and fighting for economic and political freedom. Evelyn, a high-ranking Department of Defense official appointed by President Obama, is the only candidate in the race to have stood up to attacks from far-right Trump allies like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, and pressed on for accountability and democratic integrity. She has been endorsed by senior Obama Administration officials, like Secretaries John Kerry and Leon Panetta, Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, and a growing double-digit list of current Congressional representatives. She has also been endorsed by EMILY's List, former NY State Sen. Tom Duane, and progressive activists Rob Reiner and Jane Lynch. Evelyn is running for Congress to bring her experience, including drafting federal legislation and managing crises from the White House Situation Room, to bear on our nation's greatest challenges—from stemming the coronavirus pandemic to expanding healthcare coverage and reversing climate change.
