Farkas Statement on Anti-Semitic Domestic Terrorist Attack in Monsey

Sunday, December 29, 2019

Elmsford, NY — Today, Evelyn Farkas, Democratic candidate to represent New York’s 17th congressional district, released the following statement in response to the horrific anti-Semitic attack in Monsey:

“Last night’s stabbing was a cruel and cowardly act of domestic terrorism. I am appalled and I am angry that anti-Semitic hate crimes continue to rise throughout our community, our state, our nation, and our globe. We must put an end to this senseless violence.

Anti-Semitism is one of the oldest and most horrific scourges to plague our world. Our national and global security depend on American leaders who oppose such bigotry wherever it rears its ugly head — overseas or here in our district. My heart goes out to the victims and their families as they recover and deal with the trauma in their immediate neighborhoods.

But that is not enough. This type of violence is not just a local tragedy. It is part of a broader trend in our society and globally, and we need the full power of the federal government if we are going to fight back.

Our Congress must pass laws specifically criminalizing domestic terrorism, in order to equip our law enforcement professionals with the authority and resources to identify, investigate, and prosecute domestic terrorists before they are able to do harm, just as we do with international terrorists. We must resource existing organizations within the Department of Homeland Security and elsewhere to monitor and combat this increasing threat.

This is not the New York I know. We are a state of diversity, inclusion, and principle. There is no room for bigotry and anti-Semitism here — we can, and we must, do better.”
