Foreign Policy for America Endorses Evelyn Farkas

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

Elmsford, NY — Today, Evelyn Farkas, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Obama, announced that Foreign Policy for America is endorsing her campaign. Foreign Policy for America is the nation’s preeminent organization dedicated to electing members of Congress who believe that diplomacy and respect for human rights must guide our nation’s foreign policy.

“Those who have seen her in action at the Pentagon or on Capitol Hill know – Evelyn is exactly the kind of tested leader we need right now in Congress,” said Andrew Albertson, Executive Director of Foreign Policy for America. “She has the national security expertise – and the heartfelt commitment – to work tirelessly to protect the people of her district. She’s been doing it her whole career. It will take a special leader to follow in Representative Nita Lowey’s footsteps, and Evelyn will be ready to do the job on Day 1.”

As a former human rights officer in Bosnia in the aftermath of genocide, an advocate on the Senate Armed Services Committee against the Iraq War, and as the Executive Director of the WMD Commission, which identified America’s vulnerability to an infectious threat and proposed solutions, Farkas is a natural fit for the group’s support.

“Foreign Policy for America is a critical voice fighting to ensure that human rights and diplomacy guide America’s behavior on the world stage—these principles have guided my career serving our nation, and I am honored by their endorsement,” Farkas said. “The global coronavirus crisis proves that the United States must be engaged as a constructive international partner for the health and safety of those here in the United States and around the world. In Congress, I am eager to draw upon my experience in national security, and my unshakable belief in the equality of all peoples, to help guide our nation back to a position of respected leadership among the community of nations. ”

Farkas has led the field with endorsements from many of our nation’s most experienced leaders. Foreign Policy for America’s endorsement comes on the heels of former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s endorsement yesterday, and adds to a growing and substantial list of supporters, including former Secretary of State and presidential nominee John Kerry, Senators Carl Levin and Bob Graham, Representatives Marcy Kaptur and Tom Malinowksi, and progressive activists Rob Reiner and Jane Lynch.

The daughter of refugees from Hungary and a Westchester native, Evelyn Farkas has devoted her life to serving her country and fighting for economic and political freedom. She is the only candidate in the race with decades of federal experience, including drafting and passing legislation and managing crises in the White House Situation Room. Evelyn, a high-ranking Department of Defense official appointed by President Obama, is the only candidate in the race to stand up to Trump and far-right allies like Sean Hannity. Evelyn is running for Congress to bring her experience to bear on our nation's greatest challenges—from stemming the coronavirus pandemic to expanding healthcare coverage and reversing climate change.
