Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro Endorses Evelyn Farkas for Congress

Monday, April 20, 2020

Elmsford, NY — Today, Evelyn Farkas, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives and a former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense appointed by President Obama, announced that Daniel Shapiro has endorsed her campaign to succeed retiring Rep. Nita Lowey in New York’s 17th Congressional District. Before being nominated by President Obama to be the 19th United States Ambassador to Israel, Shapiro served as senior director for the Middle East and North Africa on the United States National Security Council.

"I first met Dr. Farkas years ago, when we were both working in the United States Senate — she on the Armed Services Committee, and I on the Foreign Relations Committee — and we later served together in senior national security positions in the Obama Administration. Among many colleagues extraordinarily dedicated to serving the American public and keeping our nation safe, Evelyn stood out as a principled patriot — someone who would stand up for the truth no matter the cost. Now she has risen to the new challenges we face. From helping to expose Trump's corruption to her refusal to be silenced by attacks from the right-wing news media, Evelyn continues to prove that she has the grit, the heart, and the experience to lead. I urge all Americans, if you care about our nation's security, if you care about fairness and justice in our economy and our politics, if you care about fighting climate change, if you care about defending our democracy, support Evelyn's campaign."

“Throughout his career, Amb. Shapiro has been a principled and moral voice advocating for America’s interests abroad,” Farkas said. “From our early days on the Hill to our time serving in the Obama Administration, it has been an honor to work alongside Dan in service to our nation, building a robust US-Israel relationship, keeping Americans safe and defending democracy. I am proud to have the support of such a committed advocate for the United States, and the Jewish people, on this campaign.”

Since declaring her campaign in November, Farkas has received a groundswell of support from across the nation, including from some of America’s most experienced leaders. Farkas has been endorsed by former Secretary of State and presidential nominee John Kerry, former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta,, former Senators Carl Levin and Bob Graham, current Representatives Marcy Kaptur and Tom Malinowksi, progressive activists Rob Reiner and Jane Lynch, and former NARAL-Pro Choice and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Board Chair Jill Lafer.

The daughter of refugees from Hungary and a Westchester native, Dr. Evelyn Farkas has devoted her life to serving her country and fighting for economic and political freedom. Evelyn, a high-ranking Department of Defense official appointed by President Obama, is the only candidate in the race to have stood up to attacks from far-right Trump allies like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, and pressed on for accountability and democratic integrity. Evelyn is running for Congress to bring her experience, including drafting federal legislation and managing crises from the White House Situation Room, to bear on our nation's greatest challenges—from stemming the coronavirus pandemic to expanding healthcare coverage and reversing climate change.

New York's 17th Congressional District for the United States House of Representatives is located in the Lower Hudson Valley. It includes all of Rockland County and portions of central and northwestern Westchester County, including Chappaqua, Mt. Kisco, Ossining, Peekskill, Pleasantville, Tarrytown, White Plains, Cortlandt and Yorktown Heights.
