Health Policy Expert Zeke Emanuel Endorses Farkas for Congress

Monday, May 4, 2020

Evelyn Farkas, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Obama, has announced that Dr. Ezekiel "Zeke"Emanuel, one of America's leading health policy experts advising the nation's response to the coronavirus and chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania, has endorsed her campaign.

Farkas conducted a digital forum on 4/29 at 6pm to discuss Dr. Emanuel's views on the ongoing coronavirus crisis and what our policymakers can do to return us to a sense of normalcy. The forum can be accessed via Facebook (link here).

"For the decade-plus I've known Evelyn, I've watched her establish a professional reputation based on her expertise, her judgment, and her heart," said Dr. Emanuel. "She's built a distinguished career serving America in some of our nation's most consequential roles in Congress and at the Pentagon. Her leadership as Executive Director of the WMD Commission, which addressed America's vulnerability to an infectious threat, is only one of the many qualifications that make Evelyn uniquely suited to follow down the trail Nita Lowey blazed in Congress. She knows how to legislate and has crisis management experience from Congress to the White House Situation Room. Evelyn will be ready on day one. I'm proud to endorse her for Congress."

As Special Advisor for Health Policy during the Obama Administration, Dr. Emanuel was one of the key architects of the Affordable Care Act. Today, Dr. Emanuel serves as an advisor to Vice President Joe Biden's Campaign for President and to the World Health Organization.

"Zeke Emanuel is recognized as one of the great thinkers in our country when it comes to healthcare," Farkas said. "From solving the coronavirus crisis to creating universal healthcare coverage, I am running for Congress to address the urgent need to reform our nation's healthcare system—to have Zeke on my team is both an honor and a tremendous benefit."

Dr. Emanuel's endorsement comes as the latest in a series of major endorsements for Farkas, the only candidate in the race with federal legislative and policy experience. Earlier this week she was endorsed by former New York state Senator Tom Duane. Farkas' campaign has attracted support from some of America's most experienced leaders, including former Secretary of State and presidential nominee John Kerry, former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, former senators Carl Levin and Bob Graham, current representatives Marcy Kaptur and Tom Malinowksi, former ambassadors Stuart Eizenstat and Daniel Shapiro, as well as former NARAL-Pro Choice NY and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Board Chair Jill Lafer, and progressive activists and award-winning actors Rob Reiner and Jane Lynch.

The daughter of Hungarian refugees, Farkas was raised in Westchester and attended public schools there. For nearly three decades, she has represented the United States defending democracy and advancing human rights in the Defense Department and on the Senate Armed Services Committee staff. In addition to serving as executive director of the WMD Commission, she was a human rights officer in Bosnia and a professor at the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College. She has advised former cabinet secretaries, representatives and senators, including Nita Lowey and Hillary Clinton.

New York's 17th Congressional District for the U.S. House of Representatives is located in the Lower Hudson Valley. It includes all of Rockland County and portions of central and northwestern Westchester County, including Chappaqua, Mt. Kisco, Ossining, Peekskill, Pleasantville, Tarrytown, White Plains, Cortlandt and Yorktown Heights. District residents interested in Farkas'
