U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala Endorses Evelyn Farkas

Friday, June 12, 2020

Elmsford, NY — Today, Evelyn Farkas, a senior national security appointee under President Obama, announced that Congresswoman Donna Shalala (D-FL) has endorsed her campaign to represent New York's 17th Congressional District. Before her election to the U.S. House of Representatives, Shalala served as Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Bill Clinton and President of Hunter College in New York.

"Evelyn Farkas will be ready on day one to deliver for the people of Westchester," Shalala said. "A distinguished expert on national security, she doesn't need a prep course to become a leader in the House of Representatives. The daughter of refugees from Eastern Europe, she will always defend our democracy. I am proud to endorse her candidacy."

"Rep. Shalala has an extensive record of admirable public service across academia, public health, and in Congress," Farkas said. "I am eager to join her life-long fight to improve public education and increase healthcare access in America. Rep. Shalala understands the need for experienced officials in Congress to deliver results as we work to expand healthcare access, rebuild our public school systems, and protect civil rights."

Rep. Shalala is the 12th sitting member of Congress to endorse Farkas, joining some of America's most experienced leaders and former presidential nominees, like Secretaries John Kerry and Leon Panetta. EMILY's List, Elect Democratic Women, Council for a Livable World, Serve America, New York state and local elected officials, former NARAL-Pro Choice NY and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Board Chair Jill Lafer, and progressive activists Rob Reiner, Jane Lynch, and Jane Alexander have also jumped in to support Farkas.

The daughter of refugees from Hungary, and a Westchester native, Dr. Evelyn Farkas has devoted her life to serving her country and fighting for economic and political freedom. Evelyn, a high-ranking Department of Defense official appointed by President Obama, is the only candidate in the race to have stood up to attacks from far-right Trump allies like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, and pressed on for accountability and democratic integrity. Evelyn is running for Congress to bring her experience, including drafting federal legislation and managing crises from the White House Situation Room, to bear on our nation's greatest challenges—like stemming the coronavirus pandemic, addressing social justice, expanding healthcare coverage, and reversing climate change.
