U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell Endorses Evelyn Farkas for Congress

Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Evelyn Farkas, a senior national security official appointed by President Obama, has announced Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) has endorsed her campaign to represent New York's 17th Congressional District. Swalwell has represented California's 15th Congressional District district since 2013, and announced a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.

"Dr. Evelyn Farkas has dedicated her life to America's foreign relations and national security, and I've been impressed by her great humor and empathy," Swalwell said. "We worked hard to expose the corrupt relationship between Trump and Putin, and we share a mission today of ending the gun violence that threatens our communities. At such a pivotal moment in our nation's history, I can think of nobody better to follow in the footsteps of the great Nita Lowey. I endorse Evelyn because her experienced voice will be critical in the House, helping us make America safer, fairer, and more just for generations to come."

"Rep. Swalwell exemplifies the dedication to his district, and our nation, that define a great member of Congress," said Farkas. "Through his seat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, he plays a leading role exposing Trump's corruption and holding this lawless administration accountable—a goal that we share. I look forward to working with Rep. Swalwell in Congress to solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation, including charting our post-pandemic economic recovery, protecting our classrooms and streets from gunfire and addressing our climate crisis.

Rep. Swalwell is the latest member of Congress to endorse Farkas, joining colleagues Reps. Seth Moulton (D-MA), Tom Malinowski (D-NJ), Marcy Kaptur and others. Farkas has also been endorsed by top Obama Administration officials, including cabinet secretaries John Kerry and Leon Panetta, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and advisor John Podesta, in addition to EMILY's List, Foreign Policy for America, Serve America, former NY State Sen. Tom Duane, former NARAL-Pro Choice NY and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Board Chair Jill Lafer, and progressive activists Rob Reiner and Jane Lynch.

The daughter of Hungarian refugees, Farkas, a Westchester native, is the only candidate in the race with top-level federal legislative and policy experience. She has represented the United States defending democracy and advancing human rights in the Defense Department and on the Senate Armed Services Committee staff. In addition to serving as executive director of the WMD
Commission, Farkas was a human rights officer in Bosnia and a professor at the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College. She has briefed numerous former cabinet secretaries, representatives and senators, including Hillary Clinton and Nita Lowey.

New York's 17th Congressional District for the U.S. House of Representatives is located in the Lower Hudson Valley. It includes all of Rockland County and portions of central and northwestern Westchester including Chappaqua, Mt. Kisco, Ossining, Peekskill, Pleasantville, Tarrytown, White Plains, Cortlandt and Yorktown Heights.
