U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar Endorses Evelyn Farkas

Thursday, June 4, 2020

Elmsford, NY — Today, Evelyn Farkas, a senior national security official appointed by President Obama, announced that Representative Veronica Escobar (D-TX) has endorsed her campaign to represent New York's 17th Congressional District. Rep. Escobar, representing Texas' 16th Congressional District, delivered the Democratic Party's Spanish-language response to President Trump's 2020 State of the Union Address.

"I am proud to endorse Dr. Evelyn Farkas for Congress because she has proven through years of serving our nation that she will fight for what is right," Escobar said. "Now more than ever, we must stand up against human rights abuses and lawless leadership—something Evelyn has done throughout her career. As the child of refugees who fled to America for safety, Evelyn is proof immigrants make America stronger. I look forward to working with her to pass the comprehensive immigration reform that prioritizes human dignity, creates a pathway to citizenship, and sets our nation on the path to a brighter and more prosperous future."

"Rep. Escobar has distinguished herself as a national leader on humane and thoughtful immigration reform, and I am honored by her support," said Farkas. "America is a land of immigrants, but this President and his Republican allies have led America down a path of xenophobia and anti-immigrant lies that have torn apart families, created hundreds of orphans and weakened our nation and hemisphere. I look forward to working with Rep. Escobar to pass comprehensive reforms to address the causes of crisis immigration, especially over our southern border, and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of the color of their skin or their birthplace."

Rep. Escobar joins a double-digit group of sitting congressional representatives to endorse Farkas' campaign. Farkas has also been endorsed by top Obama Administration officials like Secretaries John Kerry and Leon Panetta and White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, in addition to EMILY's List, Foreign Policy for America, Serve America, former NY State Sen. Tom Duane, former NARAL-Pro Choice NY and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Board Chair Jill Lafer, and progressive activists Rob Reiner, Jane Lynch, and Jane Alexander.

The daughter of refugees from Hungary, and a Westchester native, Dr. Evelyn Farkas has devoted her life to serving her country and fighting for economic and political freedom. Evelyn, a high-ranking Department of Defense official appointed by President Obama, is the only candidate in the race to have stood up to attacks from far-right Trump allies like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, and pressed on for accountability and democratic integrity. Evelyn is running for Congress to bring her experience, including drafting federal legislation and managing crises from the White House Situation Room, to bear on our nation's greatest challenges—from stemming the coronavirus pandemic to expanding healthcare coverage and reversing climate change.
